Biden Picks Becerra, An Anti-Gun Advocate, As HHS Secretary

President-Elect Joe Biden selects the California attorney general, Xavier Becerra, an anti-gun advocate, to head the Department of Health & Human Services. Becerra has replaced Kamala Harris and has been sued five times by the Firearms Policy Coalition, Second Amendment Foundation, and others for gun rights lawsuits.

If Becerra is confirmed as the Secretary of Health & Human Services, he can implement federal force to restrict the sale of guns to the public. This will be under the argument that guns pose a ‘health risk’ to the citizens of this country.

Several gun rights activists, however, have argued that strict gun prohibition laws don’t solve the problem of active shooters. They maintain that killers ignore the laws and work around them to commit heinous crimes. This is also evident with the case of the shooting at the Garlic Festival in Gilroy last year. At the time, California’s state laws prohibited the sale and import of assault rifles within the state. However, the shooter secured the firearm from Nevada, a neighboring state. Therefore, even though California had strict gun laws, it did not help prevent the shooting.

Guns rights activists have also argued that the media does not seem to discuss fatal stabbings or bludgeonings. While there’s no doubt that such crimes also pose a ‘health risk,’ that term is often thrown around with gun-related crimes.

President-Elect Joe Biden is still in the process of selecting his cabinet positions. Thus, only time will tell how his administration will address gun prohibition laws on a federal and state level. It’s also looking more unlikely that the election will be reversed, so Biden will most probably be president of the United States.
